Lakewood is one of Jefferson County’s most populous neighborhoods and Colorado’s fifth most populous. When it was incorporated in 1969, Lakewood already had a population of over 90,000 people. Today the population is 143,000 strong.
A former president of the Colorado Central Railroad, named William Loveland and man named Charles Welch founded Lakewood in1889 after platting 13 blocks just west of Denver. Lakewood had no municipal government before its incorporation in 1969 but now maintains a elected government consisting of a Mayor and city council. Although there are commercial establishments in Lakewood, the city has never had a traditional downtown area.
